Archive for the ‘Why We Write’ Category

It never occurred to me how many reasons a writer writes.  Some people write to publish a book or poem.  Others write to vent or make a statement about something.  Still other direct their writing to a specific market such as fantasy or Christian.  I write because I like to write.  Unless I have a commitment from an editor to do a story for a magazine or I’m writing a blog for a purpose, I don’t set out writing with a purpose.

I’ve been posting a blog every day this month in preparation of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which is in November.  This is sponsored by The Office of Letter and Light.  Today I signed up to write a novel in one month.  After creating my profile, I joined a regional group.  The majority of whom live 45 to 90 minutes away.  We have an online forum and write-ins where we can meet at libraries or restaurants to write together.  The national website offers an abundance of support in a variety of ways including: tech, writing tips, Aps, video chats, etc.  I have yet, however to see how the whole thing works or how one “wins.”

I enjoyed reading the writers in my region.  All seemed much younger than me and their energy is contagious.  Many have won year after year and so far I have found only one other person who is a newbie or first-time NaNo.

I have three days to make a pre-plan which means I need to think seriously about what I’m going to write, my characters, my plot, my everything.  The one single advice each gave to us newbies was to not give up.  So I plan to heed that advice and do my best to write close to 2000 words a day for 30 days and hope that at the end of November I have a novel written.

If is works , it works.  If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.  I like a challenge.  I like to write.  I can do this because this is why I write.
